When I was a youth in England the thought of owning a boat was a dream that you never thought would come true.

When I got to be 40 I moved to Powell River, bought a Catalina 27, raced and cruised it with my kids and then also with Winnie. We all had terrific fun gunk holing around the coast right here on our doorstep.

Then I cruised a bigger boat to Mexico (I was going around the world but I (in sailors terms) swallowed the anchor. That means I quit in Mexico and came home.

However we did realize the dream of our lives.

Whilst I was sitting in the sun in Mexico I was reading a Cruising magazine, “The best places to cruise in the world” was the article.

 

#1 was somewhere out of reach, I can’t remember where???

#2 was the Pacific North West. Yes right here, wow!!.

 

Now we have a new Harbour, we have our boats back in the water and we are embarking on a new cruising season.

One where you just go down to the harbour right on your doorstep and within 20 minutes you are out on the water with the motor on or the sails up.

Are we lucky or what?

The yacht Club is going full steam ahead, and I know you have heard from Gerard, our Commodore, all the great things that have happened and are happening.

We have a super Club Executive who have worked very hard to get things going.

• The youth sailing program
• The rental of fun sailing dinghy’s when you want them
• The cruising
• The fun nights
• And we are going to start again with the Full Keel Racing

We took on a little debt to get things moving but the repayment is in full swing and our financial situation is great. Thank in no small way to Deidre our social/cruising director also taking on the mantle of fund Raiser.

I know you want to be part of the action, the people that make things happen.

There are a lot of vibrant motivating people in the club.

The Annual General Meeting is held in March every year; to comply with the Societies Act for Non Profit Organizations we have to hold elections at that time.

2011 Santa Clause Parade

The first weekend of December saw excellent weather for all the Christmas activities taking place.  Sunday was sunny and warm and a great day for a parade.  Members of the yacht club got together and decorated a  boat and truck to represent the yacht club.  Santa and Mrs. Clause navigated Westview Avenue with club members and children on and off the boat.  The 2011 Santa Clause Parade was well received by the community as evidenced by the smiles on the childrens' faces.

The Powell River Yacht Club's Float was the only float with FOUR BEAUTIFUL LITTLE GIRLS as Santa's Helpers and Ambassadors of the yacht club.

2011 Christmas Party

The 2011 Powell River Yacht Club Christmas Party was hosted by Ray and Robin on Friday, December 2nd.  Twenty five members enjoyed a delightful evening of fellowship, good food and adventure.  Blake and Susan shared tales and photos of their recent sailing exploits off the coast of Argentina.  Later, Kim and Leslie showcased their sailing trip to and from Hawaii.  Both presentations were enjoyed and many dreams of off shore sailing were re-ignited.

Our traditional gift exchange was as entertaining as ever.  Gifts ranged from the new to the old, the useful to the useless but no one seemed to mind.  Fun was had by all.

The Christmas Party was a great start to a very Christmas weekend with the Parade of lights on Saturday evening and the Santa Clause Parade on Sunday.

2011 Parade of Lights

Powell River was delighted to see the traditional Parade of Lights return to her shore line after missing a year in 2010.  The parade was a great success with  six decorated boats sailing up the coast from Grief Point to past Willingdon Beach with the Coast Guard following close behind. 

 Both the audience on land and the crews on the water welcomed the warm, dry, calm weather which made for a comfortable parade.  After the parade, the skippers and their crews met at the Canadian Legion Hall to warm up and enjoy tea and snacks provided by Quality Foods. The Powell  River Yacht Club THANKS the Skippers and Crews, the People of Powell River and the sponsors that helped make this year's event the wonderful experience it was.  Thanks Quality Foods for providing snacks for the after parade awards ceremony.  Thanks to the merchants that provided prizes:
